Sites

These site reports, far from being comprehensive, serve the purpose of briefly exploring each site using historic sources and previous archaeological research. The ongoing work by the Department of Conservation and the Anthropology Department of the University of Otago continue to explore these, and countless other sites throughout the region. Jill Hamel’s 2001 The Archaeology of Otago also proved an excellent resource for learning about a wide variety of archaeological work that has been conducted in the Otago Region, and was one of the first books I read after arriving in New Zealand.

The purpose of including site histories here is to demonstrate the current level of knowledge for each site (Nenthorn has had little archaeological work while Arrowtown has undergone a thorough investigation resulting in considerable restoration). The maps included for Nenthorn and Golden Point contain original information in the form of accurately mapped archaeological features. These two maps, combined with the virtual tours of all four sites, were developed to specifically satisfy my desire to contribute useful information to archaeology in the Otago Region.
